“I’ve never heard of the Winfield Rush,” Ben said on the bus. “We’ve never played them before.”

Rob listened but was distracted. He couldn’t stop thinking about what kind of guitar he wanted to buy.

“Winfield is a new science magnet school,” Coach Tom explained. “They don’t have a football team, so soccer is their big fall sport.”

Rob tried to put guitar thoughts out of his mind and focus on their next opponent. A school that specialized in science didn’t seem like a huge threat.

“A bunch of nerds, huh?” Elliot smirked.

“They might surprise you,” said Coach.

Science and soccer, Rob thought. Dad would love it here.

They reached the school. The building had a large dome on the roof.

“Planetarium?” Ben guessed.

“That’s kind of cool,” said Rob as the bus rolled by and parked by the soccer field.

The bleachers were packed like Fremont’s stands were only on football Fridays. The fans stood and cheered when the Rush ran out.

The game started. The Rush zipped around the field and made a lot of short passes. They did catch the Flyers by surprise, but they couldn’t turn the attack into a score.

Once again Ben and Elliot kept passing to Rob. He fired and missed. Fired and missed again. What’s wrong with me?

Late in the half, one of the Rush players dribbled the ball into scoring position. He stopped the ball with his toe and took a step back.

What is he doing? Rob wondered. Does he think this is a free kick?

Someone should have simply kicked the ball away, but the closest defender froze. The Rush player stepped forward and kicked the ball as hard as he could. It sailed smoothly toward the goal. Deondre dived for it but the ball hooked left, bounced off the goal frame, and went into the net. The Rush crowd cheered wildly.

Rob shook his head, still not sure how this had just happened, when the buzzer signaling the end of the half went off. It was a welcome break—the Flyers were losing, one to nothing.

“What happened there?” Coach Tom asked Alex, the defender who’d given up the goal.

“I didn’t know what was going on,” Alex said. “It took a weird turn.”

“Everything about this game is weird,” said Ben. “Rob keeps blowing it.”

“Sorry,” said Rob. “I don’t know why.”

“You’re not blowing it on purpose, are you?” Coach asked. “Trying to make some kind of point?”

“No,” said Rob, shocked. “I swear. But if you guys get a clean shot, take it.” He looked at Ben and Elliot.

Coach gave him a long look. I don’t think you believe me, Rob thought. But I’m just having an off day.

The Flyers finally scored a goal when Rob did a give-and-go with Ben. This time Rob set up the shot. Ben surprised the goalie by kicking straight for the goal instead of passing it to Rob again.

The rest of the game was scoreless, so they went into a penalty shoot-out. Each team had three shots at goal, and they had to use three different players. Coach put Elliot, Ben, and Rob down to kick.
